Pete Maravich’s All Time Scoring Record In Jeopardy

Pete Maravich owns one of the most impressive college basketball record ever and has now for over 50 years. 3667 points scored which seemed insurmountable after all Maravich averaged 44.2 points per game over his 4 seasons . It’s pretty impressive that the same year LeBron James breaks the NBA record that stood for 3 decades that this one could also fall tonight.

Antoine Davis of Detroit (Mercy) needs only 25 points to tie the all time college basketball scoring record. He’s averaging 28.4ppg on the season and just had 38 points in the last game so it’s well with in reach. As if the stakes weren’t already high, this is an elimination game in the horizon tournament. At 14-18 on the season if they were to lose tonight they likely wouldn’t play again. So this could be his last chance to break the record.

I suppose they could still play in the CBI or The Basketball Classic to try to get him, but I believe that would be frowned on. Davis has had many extra games already to do this which is why this is even a thing. Davis has played 143 games over 5 years with the Covid extra season. Maravich of course did it in 83 games. It’s still an accomplishment to average 25.5ppg in today’s college basketball over 5 seasons.

One common denominator is both players played for their fathers and have had the green light to shoot on less talented teams. Deservedly so as both were efficient for their time. Maravich was able to accomplish his feet even without a three point line or shot clock. This is a player that shot 10-15 for 66.7% from three in the only NBA season he played with a three point line. I certainly think he could have shot 40+% from a college three had their been one at the time.

Regardless it’s still an massive achievement and one that everyone should tune in to see if it falls.
