Weight Class Jumps: James Toney

James Toney is an iconic figure in American boxing history, gracing the ring professionally from 1988 to 2017. He began his career at 160 pounds, fighting as low as 157. He concluded his journey as a heavyweight, last competing at 48 years old and 249 pounds, with a peak weight of 257 pounds. He fought opponents a full 100 pounds heavier than he did at another point in his career. Standing at only 5’9″, he is one of the more unlikely heavyweight champions in history. Moreover, he holds the distinction of being the oldest heavyweight champion ever. While one might expect such achievements from someone with elite size like George Foreman or Larry Holmes, a 5’9″ and 48-year-old heavyweight champion defies all odds.

His illustrious career saw him clinch numerous world championships across three weight divisions. He reigned as the IBF and lineal middleweight champion from 1991 to 1993, secured the IBF super middleweight title from 1993 to 1994, and claimed the IBF cruiserweight title in 2003. His defensive style, lightning-fast hand speed coupled with formidable punching power characterized his style, earning him admiration for his resilience, having never succumbed to defeat by knockout in his impressive 92-fight career.

Toney’s accolades extend beyond his boxing prowess, receiving recognition as the Fighter of the Year in 1991 and 2003 from both The Ring magazine and the Boxing Writers Association of America. In 2011, The Ring magazine honored him by ranking him among the top ten middleweight champions of the past half-century. Venturing beyond the confines of traditional boxing, Toney made a memorable foray into mixed martial arts, albeit falling short against Randy Couture at UFC 118. It’s a fascinating career.

Toney beat an all time great in Evander Holyfield, a fighter that also started his career much smaller at 175lbs. Holyfield was past his prime at 40 years old, but James Toney was no spring chicken at the age of 35. It was relatively even. That puts Toney only a few fighters removed from Ali. Pretty remarkable for two fighters that fought at much lighter weight, Toney in particular at 5-9, 157 pounds to eventually be a heavyweight.

This looks like a completely different fighter.
