The Mock Transfer Portal: 80 Top College Basketball Players Likely to Move and Where

The transfer portal may soon cool from the wildfire it’s been, especially if revenue sharing forces the Power Four into similar—and much smaller—spending lanes. Schools that just splurged $14–22 million this cycle could be working with only $3–4 million next year once football takes its massive cut and basketball eats second off a $21 million essentially hard cap. With fewer giant bags to throw around, the market should correct itself somewhat, as well as reduce players moving to more random places with no regional connection, just for the money.

But make no mistake: transferring isn’t going away. Even before the era of unlimited transfers, and money—much less NIL bidding wars—the sport still saw more than 1,200 transfers per year. Revenue sharing might stabilize rosters a bit and reduce desperate overpays, but it won’t eliminate movement, especially from non-P5 mid major programs that will still be working under significantly lower player budgets.

I’ve identified roughly 80 players who are strong candidates to move next offseason. The reasons vary, but the patterns are familiar. Some are tied to coaches who are likely to jump to bigger jobs—or get fired—putting entire rosters at risk. Others are headed toward a numbers crunch, where the role they think they deserve likely won’t align with the minutes they’re about to get. And then there are the serial movers: players already on their second or third stop in as many years. When a guy has shown no inclination to stay put and there’s still more money to be made, history tells us how that story ends. The itch is real.

Some of these players will play their way up. Others will transfer because they come up short. A select few will simply chase the next payout or the next clean slate. The motivations differ, but the conclusion is the same: movement is coming—more targeted, more strategic, and far more likely tied this year to coaching dynamics than the bidding-war chaos of the past two cycles. These are our mock transfer expectations and the reasons why we expect each player to move and where.

18Sananda FruLouisvilleKentuckyI expect Fru to crush it, but when he likely plays 20 minutes or fewer minutes a game at Louisville he could look for a bigger role and more minutes. Kentucky has all the money and might find ways to filter it to the top guys, especially internationals if NIL supplements aren’t approved. He’s landed in the state of Kentucky coming from Germany. I could see him staying in-state for a bigger check, and Kentucky has the biggest checks.
25Devin RoyalOhio StateIowa StateLikely coaching change at Ohio State. He grew up in Ohio. He visited Iowa State out of high school and was recruited by TJ Otzelberger. If he wants to stay closer to home, he grew up less than 4 hours from Bloomington. Perhaps DeVries can’t win with a mid-major all-star team and goes for an All-Big Ten player.
36Eric DaileyUCLAOhio StateExpecting Cronin to bounce; might follow him to Ohio State where I think he will go. He’s from Florida, already been at UCLA and Oklahoma State, probably open to anywhere regionally. Bryan Hodgson was his lead recruiter at Alabama as well. Chris Beard recruited him too.
44Henri VeesaarNorth CarolinaGonzagaExpecting Hubert might not be there. He could still stay, but he feels like a Gonzaga big and he’s international with no real ties. He might still listen to Lloyd’s suggestions, who could help steer him here.
46Tahaad PettifordAuburnTennesseeI don’t think the NBA will be beating down his door; he probably feels some way about the late Pearl switch. Would have options from NJ, expecting him to stay in the SEC though, and Tennessee recruited him out of high school with the same staff.
47Morez JohnsonMichiganOhio StateDoubt his minutes are what he wants with Mara and Yaxel. I could see Mara fitting more with Yaxel and getting more minutes because of the need for defense and not wanting a platoon situation. Considered Ohio State out of high school and is from Illinois, close by.
56PJ HaggertyKansas StateArizonaMercenary—unlikely NBA-worthy; will be looking for the next big check and chance to chuck. From Texas, but Arizona is going to need someone to replace Bradley. They also let Caleb Love chuck and recruited Haggerty out of high school under Lloyd.
61Malique EwinArkansasAlabamaBigs don’t seem to be used enough or stick around long under Calipari. He was recruited by Oats and Alabama out of high school.
72Mason FalslevUtah St.CincinnatiProbably follows Calhoun; we have him leaning to Cincinnati.
94Paulius MurauskasSaint Mary’sKansasAlready transferred from Arizona; I could see another one coming. International with no ties. Seems to be on internationals lately too.
115Ian JacksonSt. John’sKansas StateSeems like an itchy transfer guy, not NBA-worthy; Pitino hurt his NBA value some by calling him a PG and not trying him there after camp. Kansas State loves to pay guys like this late. Expect him to go through the draft process and find his way there after most everyone else has spent theirs. Match made out of necessity. Kansas State and Tang offered out of high school.
119Baye NdongoGeorgia TechNebraskaLikely coaching change or enough losing. He’s too talented to stay either way. Fred Hoiberg recruited him out of high school.
122Amani HansberryVirginia TechAuburnProbably a coaching change; already transferred once laterally—likely has it in his blood already with 3 schools in 3 years. Was recruited by Auburn out of high school; here comes the fourth.
124Keanu DawesUtahMississippi StateEntered the portal and nearly left last year; likely more losing and a coach who didn’t recruit him there. Originally from Texas, Chris Jans tried to get him to Mississippi State out of high school.
125Filip JovićAuburnKentuckyThe Pearl switch might have left a bad taste for players on that team yet again. Might stay in the SEC.
130Adrian WooleyLouisvilleTexas A&MAlready transferred; I question if there will ever be enough minutes the way Kelsey manages his bench. Bucky McMillan recruited him at Samford; he still might not get the minutes he wants at Texas A&M either, but it’s a similar up-tempo style.
132Rodney RiceUSCUConnKeep it moving. That’s what seems to happen at USC and he’s already got the transfer bug—4th school in 4 years maybe coming. Also, Dan Hurley recruited him out of high school.
134John Mobley Jr.Ohio StateCreightonLikely coaching change; was offered by Greg McDermott out of high school.
144Isaiah ColemanOklahoma StateAuburnTransferring gets in the blood. Probably has another one in him after not winning again; P5 schools up the chain will need to replace what they lose. Pearl and staff recruited him out of high school.
152Jizzle JamesCincinnatiUCFSomeone’s going to buy low. When they go low, look at UCF.
167Barrington HargressColoradoUCLAGood get for Colorado, but they don’t seem to have as much money; revenue sharing might help, but I wouldn’t expect enough winning to keep him excited. He’s a California-born guy. After he proves something in the Big 12, likely heads back if I had to guess.
170Donnie FreemanSyracuseAlabamaCoaching change likely; don’t think he quite has the juice for the NBA. Nate Oats recruited him out of high school, as did Chris Beard.
174Andrew MeadowBoise StateStanfordThey kept him once—can they do it again if he levels up? Seems less likely. He’s a California guy and Kyle Smith offered out of high school.
177Bangot DakColoradoNebraskaP5 farming—seems like he’s just getting video for when he’s ready to move up the food chain. He went to school in Nebraska. I got nothing beyond that.
185Sebastian MackMissouriOklahomaHe left UCLA; will he get enough shots and role with Robinson and Mitchell to keep him happy here? We’ll see. Porter Moser recruited him out of high school; might not be at Oklahoma.
217Chase WalkerIllinois StateLouisvilleThey somehow survived keeping him one year; I don’t see that happening a second time. He could follow Pedon to his next job—mocked him to Wichita State, but I’d expect a P5 too, and he’s from Ohio. Pat Kelsey recruited him when he was at Charleston.
266Dedan ThomasLSUHoustonShort stay; likely coaching change coming and another move. Kelvin Sampson, Mark Few, Todd Golden, and others recruited him out of high school. Feels like a Houston inefficient guard.
287Antonio DornVirginia TechArizonaCoaching change could encourage this; he’s international, so he could go anywhere. Arizona likes internationals. That’s all I got here.
289Roman DomonMurray StateKentuckyShould be a top mid-major player with years to play and likely to get more money. Don’t really have a landing place. Total guess. He’s already in Kentucky, and they have money.
293Harun ZrnoRutgersUNCAnother potential coaching change looming. Another international—just a guess. There aren’t any obvious UNC guys, so we’ll get them on the board with some international flavor already.
321Aaron BradshawMemphisVillanovaThree schools in three years; Penny might not make it, so I expect a fourth year—seems inevitable. He’s from New Jersey and likely won’t be a premium recruit this time. Kevin Willard recruited him out of high school.
325Sean StewartOregonOle MissThree schools in three years—why not four in four? Some guys just have moving in the blood. Chris Beard recruited him out of high school; will need to replace Dia.
328Abdul BashirAuburnKansas StateComing off the bench; probably will be looking for a new home. Jerome Tang offered last year, and his brother is there as well.
332Miles RubinLoyola ChicagoMarquetteP5 likely will come calling. He’s from Chicago and doesn’t seem interested in moving very far away. Shaka Smart didn’t take a transfer last year; I think a relatively bad year coming and missing the NCAA will change that philosophy.
373Caden PiercePrincetonNorthwesternHe’s wrapping up his redshirt year and Ivy League degree. He’s from Chicago; let’s guess Northwestern.
378Mister DeanCharlestonUSFAlready on his second school in two years. Likely working his way up the ladder. I don’t know still if he’s good enough to jump directly to the P5. Mack might have to bring him with him. If not, USF has money and would be a good bridge. He’s from Miami.
387Jacob MeyerUABKentuckyThree schools in three years—expect four in four. He’s from Kentucky; I would imagine that’s the dream, and they haven’t come up on the list much yet.
391Kyan EvansNorth CarolinaMinnesotaCoaching change possible; already transferred once. He’s from Missouri and might end back up with Niko Medved.
405Justin McBrideJames MadisonTCUHas already been in the P5 and two schools in two years; probably heading back to a P5 for year three. From Texas; was offered by Jamie Dixon out of high school.
415Tyler RolisonNevadaTexasProbably plays himself into P5 offers. Was offered by Sean Miller when he was at Xavier.
417Derin SaranUC IrvineUSCBoomeranged back to UC Irvine from a P5; maybe he stays, but expect a big year and offers from P5s. From Turkey and prepped in NC, but seems to like it out west.
425Jonathan PowellNorth CarolinaDaytonCoaching change potential. He’s from Ohio; Dayton and the A10 seem more like his level.
433Caleb FosterDukeClemsonI don’t think he’s really good enough to stay at Duke and it will be mutual. He’s from NC; Brad Brownell recruited him out of high school. Would be close by home.
451Rashaan MbembaColorado StateBYUTwo-fold: Colorado State probably struggles more, and he plays his way into P5 money. He’s from Austria, so it seems wide open. We’ll just stay out west where the money is.
454Mikey WilliamsSacramento StateNC StateEither it works out or goes really poorly; either way, I expect the stay is short. Probably going to take the right amount of dirty either way. Will Wade recruited him out of high school.
470Garwey DualMcNeeseDePaulProbably has a pretty good year and makes it back to the P5, lower-level P5, and he’s from Illinois. Layden Blocker clone gets to play with him, possibly.
472Scotty MiddletonTulaneClemsonThree schools in three years—make it four. Probably rehabs his value enough to make it back to a P5. He’s from Florida and was recruited by Brad Brownell out of high school.
476Michael WalzRichmondPenn StateProbably needs a waiver, but a productive seven-footer—P5s can use that. From Pennsylvania and offered by Penn State out of high school.
480Nick TownsendYaleSt. John’sWill also need a waiver, but probably stands a chance to get it. From New York.
506Dylan DarlingSt. John’sVCUHe’s either going to win the starting PG job or likely be looking for a new job. I don’t expect it to go as well even if he does. He’s transferred multiple times and is from Washington, so could play anywhere.
508Jalil BetheaAlabamaPenn StateI don’t think he will find the role he likes or excel enough in it to stick. He’s from Pennsylvania and was offered by Mike Rhodes out of high school. Don’t think he drops completely out of the P5, but down to the lower-tier teams.
523Ahmad Henderson IIIllinois ChicagoLoyola ChicagoVery small but still has some upward mobility. From Chicago, going to Loyola Chicago and the A10.
534Sam OrmeBelmontSt. LouisDon’t think he’s long for the MVC. He was offered by Josh Shertz when he was at Indiana State out of high school.
535Tyler LundbladeBelmontSMUWho can’t use a 48% three-point shooter? It’s impressive they kept him this year but can’t see that lasting. From Dallas, Texas; started his career at TCU.
536Johnny KinzigerIllinois StateWisconsinPedon likely gets a better job; I think he would take him with him, but he is a Wisconsin guy. I could also see that fit.
537Rowan BrumbaughTulaneKansasImpressive Tulane kept him; hard to do again after already being at a P5. He was recruited by Self and Kansas out of high school.
539Patrick WesslerUNCWCreightonHe’s from NC—maybe he likes UNCW, but he will likely have opportunities back up the ladder for more money. From NC but was offered by Creighton out of high school.
554Dasonte BowenSt. BonaventureBoston CollegeHe was in the rotation at Iowa; I think he’ll have a chance to go back to the P5 albeit lower tier. From Boston.
555Delrecco GillespieKent StateMichiganWill need a waiver, but I’d expect him to get it and have a chance to get paid in the P5. He’s from Michigan.
557Brandin CummingsPittsburghDuquesnePossible coaching change or a move down. Pittsburgh guy, offered by Duquesne out of high school as well.
561Jayden DawsonKansasSt. LouisWould need a waiver—likely gets one. I don’t think he’s Kansas material; they’ll move on. Recruited by Josh Shertz out of high school.
569David TerrellNorth TexasTexas A&MAAC is constantly picked over by the P5—expect a move at this point; he’s already moved. Texas guy, and A&M always need players as many as they play.
576Alvaro FolgueirasIowaVirginiaI’m not sure he’ll be up for the Big Ten despite his national rating. Water might find its level elsewhere. Ryan Odom was one of his only offers out of high school when he was at Utah State. Maybe he still believes.
578Xavier BookerUCLAMemphisIs he actually Big Ten-ready? Might head to the Pac-12 or AAC. Hello Memphis, Penny recruited him out of high school.
584Samis CalderonKansasWichita StateI don’t think he’s Kansas level—look for him to move elsewhere.
590Dylan FaulknerSamfordTexas A&MHe transferred but stuck with his coach. It will be a lot harder next year to keep him from the P5. Bucky McMillan recruited him out of high school.
599Jaquan JohnsonBradleyIllinoisVery small but productive. Might put up a big season and get to a mid- to lower-level P5. He’s from Wisconsin. Little small, but Illinois needs a Boswell replacement.
604David FuchsSan FranciscoRutgersBig guy who might follow Gulefson or play his way to a P5. He started at Rhode Island, so location doesn’t matter for this international.
614Peter BandeljCal PolyUtah StateHis coach might move on, and he could play his way into a bigger opportunity. Could follow his coach to a better job.
622Jerry DengNC StateECUProbably not more than a role player at NC State. Will he want a bigger role? Maybe. From NY; was recruited by ECU out of high school.
625Luke BamgboyeTexas TechTCUReportedly paid $2 million—expect he will disappoint at that price, and Texas Tech will likely move on. From London; was recruited by Jamie Dixon out of high school.
626Carter WellingClemsonUtahHe’s transferred before. Those guys are always more likely to move again. Utah guy probably moves back west.
654Paul MbiyaKansasUABDoesn’t feel like a Kansas-level player from my translations. Kansas likely disappoints and flips the bottom of the roster.
660Dennis ParkerRadfordIllinoisI don’t think Radford will have the autoloan money next year. He played on a Final Four team—likely back in the P5 sooner than later. Was offered by Brad Underwood and Illinois out of high school.
669Juke HarrisWake ForestHigh PointCoaching change, and question if he’s good enough. From NC, could stay in the same area.
687Josh HarrisIndianaUSFIs he good enough to make a mark at Indiana or wait his turn? From Florida.
702Corey CaulkerECUUSMProbably a coaching change. Was offered by USM in the past year.
737Brock FelderSeattleUtah StateProbably will get an opportunity up the food chain for a former walk-on. From Utah.
782Colby DugganCharlestonSt. BonaventureMight have a coaching change; could follow Mack with a good year. We’ll land him in the A10 for now, and he’s from the Northeast.
813Kam WilliamsKentuckyGeorge MasonI don’t see it here—he wasn’t productive in the AAC; don’t expect the SEC to be kind even in a no-pressure bench role. Was offered by Tony Skinn out of high school.
